Subsidiaries of Dollar Tree
- Family Dollar
Key Findings
- Dollar Tree announced its Commitment to Eliminate Priority Chemicals in June 2017 and released its Chemical Policy in 2019. The commitment listed 17 priority chemicals or classes of chemicals that it expected its suppliers to reduce or eliminate from private-label products by 2020. In February 2021, the company announced it successfully eliminated those priority chemicals from its “active” private-label products.
- The policy includes a requirement for private label and brand name suppliers to disclose “full ingredients” for formulated products into WERCS, including impurities and fragrance components.
- The company participated in the Chemical Footprint Project in 2019 and 2020, although it did not disclose its results.
Recommendations for Dollar Tree
- Dollar Tree can make progress by disclosing progress related to its suppliers reporting full chemical ingredient information into WERCS.
- We urge the company to follow through on commitments to expand its priority list and eliminate and safely replace any per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), toxic flame retardants, and phthalates (in addition to the ones currently on its priority list) that may be in the products it sells. We also urge the company to specifically eliminate and safely replace any toxic indirect food additives in food-contact materials, covering at least the classes listed above that may be in food packaging or other food-contact materials in its supply chain. The company should also eliminate plastics of environmental health concern from its product and packaging materials.
- While it is good that the company has disclosed some alternatives it is moving to, Dollar Tree should publicly disclose all of the alternatives used to replace CHCs after eliminating them. The company should also disclose its survey results from participating in the Chemical Footprint Project.
